From this point here at the bridge at 17:00 on 26 August 1944 the first Canadian troops crossed the river Seine in pursuit of the German forces. The bridge here in Criquebeuf-sur-Seine is named in honour of a Canadian officer Major Charles Keith Crummer.
At around 12:00 on 26 August 1944, The Lincoln & Welland Regiment (L&W), 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade, Canadian 4th Armoured Division advanced from La Haye Malherbe through the Foret Domaniale de Bord. They then advanced towards the banks of the river Seine where into the village of Criquebeuf-sur-Seine.
When the men of the L&W entered the village, they found no Germans present and no opposition was offered. However, it did not take long for German artillery on the northern side of the Seine to begin shelling the village.
A and B companies took up positions on the banks of the river Eure which looked out towards an island area, the river Seine beyond. C and D companies were located to the rear of the village. A command post was setup in a house and grounds which was close to a small bridge that crossed the river Eure. The house is on the eastern side of the road by the church facing towards the bridge.
Canadian men of the L&W tried to make the bridge suitable for men to cross, but the German shellfire prevented them from doing so. This bridge is now named ‘Pont Major Charles K Crummer’.
At 17:00 a scout platoon had made it over the river Eure and to the Seine. They had successful crossed and were quickly followed by D Company lead by Major Crummer. They used small boats and had to use shovels to paddle across.
A bridgehead was formed on the northern side of the river Seine in the area of the small hamlet of Freneuse. There was a small amount of street fighting as the Canadian men secured the area. By 19:30, the whole company were successfully across. It was not until midnight that the first German counter attacks would be encountered by the L&W.
The following day, more Companies from the L&W would cross over the river Seine. They would advance on to Igoville where heavy opposition from German forces were encountered.
