On 25 August 1944, American forces to the south of France had advanced beyond the British and Canadian forces, still in the Normandy region. From the south, combat teams had moved to the south and west of Louviers.
The US 30th Infantry Division to the south had pursued German forces to Evreux. A small number of combat teams quickly pushed north towards the town of Louviers to cut off escape routes for the German forces.
On 25 August 1944 the US combat team entered the town of Louviers to find that no German forces were present, and the town was clear.
Meanwhile, at 07:00 the Canadian 10th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry advanced into Louviers. By 08:00 contact was established with the Mayor of the town hall and head of the local resistance movements. One of the main discussions was securing accommodation for the men, as the town was still populated with civilians.
From the west, Canadian infantry of the Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (A&SH) moved to the high ground and linked up with the US forces at Louviers at around 13:00.
A&SH quickly looked to advance from the town, the River Seine was now within reach and crossing points needed to be established. Lieutenant Johnson was tasked to lead a scout patrol towards the village of Pont de L’Arche. Intelligence indicated that the dense woods to the south of Pont de L’Arche, which stood between A&SH and the village, was held in force by German troops.
However, Johnson‘s patrol advanced and found the wood to be clear of enemy forces, whilst the villagewas also clear. At 23:00 Johnson reported back that the village was in Canadian hands, enabling more men to move down towards the Seine the next day.
The US forces in the area handed over control to the Canadian troops and withdrew back to the south.
