Mainly victims of Operation Blackcock, a gruesome battle in which the so-called Roerdriehoek between Sittard and Roermond was liberated from the Nazis in January 1945, are buried in the Commonwealth Cemetery in Ophoven-Sittard.
239 soldiers are buried here, six of whom were never identified. Of particular note are the graves of 19-year-old Dennis Donnini, the youngest Commonwealth bearer of the Victoria Cross, and Vivienne Hole. She was the only member of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) to die in the war. The ENSA was founded in 1939 to provide entertainment for personnel of the British Armed Forces.
