The Polderhuis Museum is the museum about the history of Westkapelle. The eternal battle with the water behind the sea dyke, Westkapelle during the war and the Battle of the Scheldt as well as the post-war reconstruction.
History comes to life in the Polderhuis Museum. Citizens tell about World War II, the Battle of the Scheldt and the devastating bombardment of 1944. Listen to memories, watch the impressive photographs and watch by phone or tablet movies and sections with a QR code. In the North Sea remnants of the war are still found. Watch the treasures that have been brought to surface from landing craft having been scuttled in front of the coast of Westkapelle during the Battle of the Scheldt
In Westkapelle, a Sherman tank stands atop the sea dyke. The tank came ashore in November 1944 in the Battle of the Scheldt during Operation Infatuate II. The Sherman tank was a Crab version, meaning it had a minesweeping outfit built on it. This was taken off in the late 1950s. The tank is an important symbol of the liberation of Westkapelle (Walcheren) and the Battle of the Scheldt.
