The museum is based in the former defensive positions of Widerstandnest (Strongpoint) 30 which formed an integral part of the German defences around Calais.

The construction of this large bunker began in 1941 with the German occupation approaching a year. It was designed as a command post which had upwards of 60 individual rooms within it. The design of thick concrete offered protection from any allied bombing raids that may target it.

Over the period of 1941 to 1944 the command post was used by numerous German commanders. Within the bunker complex was a telephone exchange room. This would be used for communication between coastal batteries in the region on the coastline and the ports of Dunkirk, Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer.

On the 30 September 1944 the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division advanced into Calais and took the surrender of the German garrison. The Canadians found this bunker complex by chance and upon entering it destroyed the telephone exchange room using flame throwers.

The bunker in the 1960’s was transformed into a museum which utilises most of the rooms within. It has displays of 60 different types of uniforms worn by both allies and axis forces during the Second World War.

The museum covers the story of German occupation through to the liberation of Calais and brings together different stories from both sides.
