These battles would continue throughout the autumn and winter. On 23 September, a British bomber from the 617th “Dam Busters” Squadron crashed on the edge of ‘het Grote Veld’. All crew members managed to leave the aircraft in time, except for Flight Lieutenant Stout. He did not survive the crash and was buried in Lochem’s new cemetery a week later.
