Distance

150.36 km

This route through the eastern part of Friesland tells the stories that follow in the footsteps of the Canadian liberators on their way to the Wadden Sea. Their mission was to sever the connection between German troops in Friesland and Groningen, gradually isolating them and ultimately forcing their surrender.

Experience how the fighting began in early April 1945 in the forests south of Oosterwolde, and how the resistance then strove to defend the bridges over the canal near Burgum, Kootstertille, and Augustinusga (Blauwverlaat). All of this was done to maintain the momentum of the Canadian advance. The lock complex near Kollumerpomp was the final place along this route where fierce battles were fought between the Frisian resistance and the German occupiers from April 13 to 16.

In the days leading up to the liberation, many lives were still lost. Along this route through eastern Friesland, numerous monuments commemorate the many victims claimed by the war. Drachten even has a Freedom Park and a square with no fewer than seven monuments.

Jewish victims, Sinti and Roma, civilian casualties, fallen Allied airmen of downed aircraft, victims of forced labor, of armed resistance, soldiers killed during the May days of 1940, victims of raids, and of the milk and railway strikes — this route tells their stories, and the memorials along the way invite you to pause and reflect.

Set out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, where the charm of the Frisian landscape stands in stark contrast to the moving stories that remind us how precious and fragile freedom truly is.
