It is not widely known, but the western Gelderland river area was among one of the hardest hit areas in the Netherlands in World War II. In May 1940, the region was already part of the fighting when German troops invaded. Especially the period from September 1944 to May 1945, more than seven months, when the rivers Maas and Waal formed the front line between German and Allied troops had enormous consequences.

This route not only pays attention to the last drastic year of the war, but dwells on the entire period of World War II; from mobilisation in 1939 to the beginning of the true task of rebuilding the region. The perspective of soldiers and civilians is covered, showing both daily life and the drastic events.
